In Venice!

Buon giorno!  Right now I’m in Venice!   We took the train from Rome to Venice yesterday and we are staying here in our hotel for four more nights.   Our hotel room has two floors!   The bottom floor has a desk, a closet, a tv, a big window, and two small beds where me and my sister sleep.   The top floor has a bathroom and a big bed where my parents sleep.   Venice has a lot of water in it.   There are no cars at all!   There are paths and streets (without cars) alongside the water.   There is something called a gondola, which is a long, very narrow boat that glides through the canals.   People sit in it while one rower in a striped shirt stands up in the back of the boat and rows with one oar.   I’ve never been in one before but they look fun!

Last night we checked in to our hotel and we were so hungry! (There wasn’t any food on the four-hour train ride!) So we walked to a restaurant.   My sister got a pizza, my mom got a pizza, my dad got a salad, and I got a piece of lasagna.   It was sooooo good!   It was like a stack of noodles in a tomato-cheese-meat sauce.   When I ordered it I tried to order in Italian.  That made the waiter happy!   I think we’re finally used to the time change (nine hours ahead!) because we slept all night.   Well, gotta go have my dinner!

First Days in Rome!

Ciao amici!
I arrived in Rome on Tuesday.   Our apartment is nice.  It is near the Campo de Fiori, which is a huge outside farmer’s market that goes up every morning.  We’ve already had our first gelato.  We got limone (lemon sorbet), crema de limone (lemon curd), stracciatella (vanilla with chocolate flakes), and bacio de principe (chocolate and hazelnut).  They were delicious!  I also just had my first carbonara here.  It is a kind of pasta made with spaghetti, egg, pepper, cheese, and pieces of pork.  It’s one of my favorite pastas.  That’s why my blog is called Carbonara Kid! (It’s also the official pasta of Rome).
We saw and did a lot of things today.  We went to the market to buy green beans and plums, we went to a cat sanctuary to see lots of cats, we walked around the city, we had pasta for lunch, and we might be having more gelato for dessert!
Well, gotta go eat my gelato!

Fun Italian word:  Andiamo!  (Let’s go!)

Welcome to my blog!

Welcome to Carbonara Kid!  This blog will be about what I do, feel, eat, and see when I am in Italy. Tomorrow we are leaving and staying there for ten weeks. This week we have been packing our suitcases and have been eating up all of our food.  Yesterday we gave our hamster to some friends to take care of when we are gone.  Today we are giving our cat to some other friends.  We have such nice friends!
I am feeling excited and nervous and sorta sad.  I’m feeling excited and nervous about what we’ll do there and what it’ll be like.  I’m feeling sorta sad because we have to say goodbye to our pets, house, friends, and neighborhood.
Everyone keeps asking me,“What about school?”  Yes, I will miss some school, but I will still have to do some work, like math and reading.  And  some of my work will be writing on this blog!
Well, the next time you hear from me I’ll probably be in Italy.

Fun Italian Phrase:  Ciao amici! (Hello/goodbye friends!)
