Hello, hello! I hope everyone is well. I am. Last night I made pasta carbonara for the last time in Rome because we are coming home in a few days. Even though it turned out a little too watery, it was still super yummy! I’m going to miss the fresh carbonara you can make in Italy, even though we can still make it at home.
Rome is getting decorative for the holidays. Pretty lights are starting to pop up along the streets and between buildings. On Friday people are putting up a big Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square and we are excited to go see it lit up. My mom bought a panettone and a pandoro which are big breakfast cakes, sometimes with candied fruit. We also bought two LEGO nutcrackers (that cannot crack nuts). We’ve also been making paper snowflakes to hang in our window. Yesterday I saw four men in the street playing instruments and they were all dressed up as Santa Claus.
A few days ago we went to the Vatican Museums. We saw lots of galleries including the tapestry gallery, the map gallery, the Raphael rooms, and the pinecone courtyard. My favorites were the animal hall, with all its animal statues, and the Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel is probably the most well known room out of all the rooms. It has a giant ceiling and wall that were painted by the artist Michaelangelo. I really wanted to see it because I’ve seen pictures of the ceiling all over on postcards and magnets, and I thought it would be cool to see the real thing. The ceiling was bigger than I expected. The ceiling and wall had a lot of things that I didn’t notice when I saw them on the postcards and magnets. When Michaelangelo painted the ceiling, he had to stand on a very high scaffolding craning his neck. It took him almost four years to paint it. I couldn’t believe that he worked so hard and long painting in a funny position, and now it’s a great masterpiece. I don’t think I would want to paint my ceiling. My neck just got stiff looking at it!
The whole thing was fun though.
Toodles!
Fun Italian Phrase: Buon Natale (Merry Christmas).
